Unelected Sharif to attend in-camera parliamentary session

ISLAMABAD, October 07 (Internews): Pakistan Muslim League-N chief Nawaz Sharif has accepted Prime Minister Yousuf Gilani’s invitation to attend a special joint session of parliament that will be given an in-camera briefing on the security situation in the country on Wednesday.

Official sources confirmed on Tuesday that Gilani had called Sharif to invite him and that the former prime minister had accepted the invitation even though he is not elected.

When contacted, Sharif said the parliament is the only forum where all the national and international issues concerning Pakistan should be discussed, and termed the joint session of the relatively newly elected national legislature a step in the right direction to ensure the supremacy of parliament.

Gilani told Sharif that the joint session had been summoned on the PML-N chief’s desire and that the step proved that all democratic forces believed in strengthening democratic institutions. He also thanked Sharif for accepting the invitation.
